At 1970, Education & Culture Minister had assigned completion of 12 technic education instances which is called PROYEK PERINTIS SEKOLAH TEKNOLOGI MENENGAH PEMBANGUNAN with long study in 4 years. There are 8 school which are placed at Jakarta, Semarang, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Ujung Pandang, Bandung, Pekalongan and Temangung. Then there were also had been developed Proyek Perintis Sekolah Menengah Teknologi Pertanian with study time in 3 years at Jember, Boyolali, Tanggeang and Metro. By practice in industry in one last year, it wished that this projects misson, education relevance can be achieved. This means that this project must can produce skilled resource which have quality that relevance with Indonesian industry needs so it can increase productivity to support Indonesian 5 years sustainable development. STM Pembangunan at Surabaya now become SMK Negeri 5 Surabaya with same long study, 4 years.

Vision and Mission

Vision :

To be a preeminent school which is able to compete in the globalization era.

Mission :

1. To supply the learners with science and technology which are relevant to the demand of the industry.

2. To prepare the learners to be productive, adaptive, normative, and creative citizens at present as well in the future.

Objective :

In line with its vision and mission, SMK Negeri 5 Surabaya is intended to :

• Produce professional and skilled graduates who meet the requirements of business and industry.

Superiority :

• SMK Negeri 5 Surabaya is an SBI School ( International Standardized School ) for Automotive and Mechanical Engineering, and Electronical department.

• In 2006, it obtained the certificate of 9001 – 2000 ISO.

• It has broad mutual relationship with domestic and international industry.

• It becomes a pilot project of Giant School in 2007 – 2008.

• It has also been a pilot project of Green School since 2007.

  3. Prakerin Program for 6 up to 12 months in the fourth year.

Volley Ball, Football, Rowing, Badminton, Basketball, Tennis, Swimming, Self-defense (karate), Passus ( Pasukan Khusus), Keputrian, Music, Theater, Rebana, Al Banjari, PMR, PA, Kopsis, Scout.
